I. Introduction:

Arriving in Cambodia is like stepping into a world where ancient history and modern life coexist harmoniously. From the moment we set foot in this beautiful country, we were captivated by the warmth of its people and the breathtaking landscapes that stretch as far as the eye can see. Cambodia, often referred to as the "Land of Temples and Smiles," offers a journey filled with discovery, reflection, and awe.

II. History and Culture:

A Journey Through Time Walking through the ancient ruins of Angkor Wat, we felt like we’d traveled back in time. This massive temple complex, built in the early 12th century, stands as a testament to the ingenuity and devotion of the Khmer Empire. The intricate carvings and towering spires are not just architectural marvels but also narratives etched in stone, depicting the mythology and history of a civilization that once ruled Southeast Asia.

The Resilient Spirit of the Khmer People Cambodia's history is not just about grandeur but also about resilience. The scars of the Khmer Rouge regime are still visible, yet the spirit of the Khmer people remains unbroken. Visiting the Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum and the Killing Fields was a very sobering experience, reminding us of the atrocities that took place here just a few decades ago. Despite this dark chapter, the Cambodian people have shown remarkable strength and have rebuilt their lives with a sense of hope and determination.

III. Top Attractions:

Angkor Wat: The Crown Jewel No visit to Cambodia is complete without experiencing Angkor Wat. We spent 3 days exploring the different temples and hired a guide and driver for part of the time. It took 2 days to convince Bill that we had to be at Angkor Wat as the sun rises! Our tuktuk driver picked us up at 5:15am. It was pitch black and we wondered how we would recognize him to bring us back to the hotel. No problem! He recognized us, saying “Big man, white hair”!

As the sun cast a golden hue over the ancient stones we knew it was worth the early wake-up call.  The view was stunning and it's easy to understand why this site is a UNESCO World Heritage treasure. Wandering through the temple's corridors, each turn reveals a new wonder - from the serene faces of the Bayon Temple to the sprawling roots of Ta Prohm, entwined with ruins, famous for being featured in Indiana Jones and Tomb Raider.

Phnom Penh: The Heartbeat of Cambodia The capital city, Phnom Penh, is a vibrant blend of old and new. The Royal Palace, with its gleaming spires, stands as a symbol of the country's rich heritage. Nearby, we visited the Silver Pagoda with its impressive collection of Buddha statues and artifacts. The city’s energy is palpable, and its streets are alive with the sounds and sights of daily Cambodian life. We chose a hotel out of the city center but also enjoyed a beer at a restaurant on the riverfront at the junction of the Mekong and Tole Sap rivers.

Siem Reap: Gateway to Wonders Siem Reap, often seen as the gateway to Angkor, is a charming town that has grown into a bustling hub for travelers. Its lively night markets are perfect for picking up souvenirs, from handwoven textiles to unique jewelry. We spent time exploring Pub Street, where the air is filled with music and the aroma of street food. The market is enormous selling everything from live fish to sacks of fragrant spices!

IV. Responsible Tourism:

Traveling with Respect As a visitor, it's very important to travel responsibly and respect the culture and environment of this incredible country.

Supporting Local Artisans

We made it a point to buy souvenirs directly from local artisans. This way, we could be sure that the money was going directly to the creators of these beautiful crafts. In markets and small shops, you’ll find lovely handwoven scarves, intricate silver jewelry, and beautifully crafted pottery, each piece a testament to Cambodia's rich artistic heritage.

Respecting Sacred Sites Cambodia’s temples and historical sites are sacred spaces that deserve our utmost respect.  We dressed modestly when visiting these places and made sure to follow local customs, such as removing shoes before entering temples and not touching sacred objects.

V. Conclusion:

Leaving Cambodia, we carry with us the memories of its stunning temples, rich history, and the smiles of its people. We also were invited by our driver to his sister’s wedding reception which was attended by 1,000 people – 998 Cambodians and 2 Americans! It was a real treat!

This land of ancient wonders and resilient hearts has left an indelible mark on us. Whether you are exploring the majestic ruins of Angkor, navigating the lively streets of Phnom Penh, or enjoying the vibrant culture of Siem Reap, Cambodia promises an unforgettable journey filled with beauty, history, and hope.
