Summer is almost here and RVers are getting ready to hit the road!

Being complete newbies at RVing, we did this road trip in 2015! We loved it!

We looked for a theme for our trip and Route 66, the “Mother Road,” captured our imagination.  It holds a special place in the hearts of travelers seeking a taste of Americana and adventure. It is also a great history lesson. The route covers 2,400 miles from Chicago, Illinois, to Santa Monica, California, and weaves through eight states, offering a nostalgic journey through small towns, quirky roadside attractions, and breathtaking landscapes. We feel traveling Route 66 by RV is the perfect way to experience the charm of this historic route at your own pace.

Nostalgia and Iconic Landmarks

Driving along Route 66 is like stepping back in time to an era of neon-lit diners, classic motels, and vintage gas stations. We passed through charming towns frozen in time, where Main Street is still bustling with mom-and-pop shops and local eateries while others that had seen better days.

With the help of a guidebook, we stopped at landmarks and roadside attractions that have become synonymous with the American road trip experience. From the Old Joliet Prison in Illinois, featured in the movies Blues Brothers and Prison Break, to the Cadillac Ranch in Amarillo, Texas, each stop along the route offers a unique glimpse into the history and culture of the American West. Traveling by RV allows you to pull over and explore these landmarks at your leisure, capturing the essence of Route 66 in every mile.

Small-Town Hospitality

Small Town America

One of the highlights of traveling by RV is the opportunity to connect with other RVers and friendly locals who call the Mother Road home. Visiting the Route 66 Museum in Clinton Oklahoma is a must as well as the historic La Posada Hotel in Winslow, Arizona. Each town along the route welcomes visitors with open arms and genuine hospitality. Our memories include stopping at a diner in Albuquerque for a slice of homemade pie as well as talking with fellow travelers at a roadside café in Adrian, Texas, the midpoint of Route 66.

Conclusion

Traveling Route 66 by RV is a journey through time, history, and Americana unlike any other. We were so enthralled with our experience that we planned another RV trip, this time to some National Parks! But more of that later!

So pack your bags, fuel up your RV, and hit the road for the ultimate American road trip along Route 66.
