Saigon, or Ho Chi Minh City, is a bustling metropolis that offers a blend of historical landmarks, vibrant street life, and rich culture. We were so captivated with the city that we returned for a second visit! For those seeking a touch of adventure without straying too far from comfort, this city provides a perfect balance. We prefer to plan and book our own travels, but we found that whether you're a fan of soft adventure travel, eager to immerse yourself in local culture, or prefer self-guided tours, Saigon has something for everyone. Here’s a comprehensive guide to help you make the most of your visit to this dynamic city.

1.1. Mekong Delta Exploration

One of the most popular soft adventure activities near Saigon is a trip to the Mekong Delta. This lush, fertile region is known for its intricate network of rivers, swamps, and islands. After getting up before dawn to experience the best of the floating market, we continued our boat tour through the winding waterways. This is where you'll witness the daily lives of local fishermen, visit floating markets, and explore lush fruit orchards.  In particular, we enjoyed making rice cakes with a family!

Tips:

• Opt for a guided tour to ensure you don’t miss any highlights.
• Bring a hat, sunscreen, and insect repellent to stay comfortable.

1.2. Cu Chi Tunnels: A Glimpse into History

For a unique blend of adventure and history, visit the Cu Chi Tunnels. These underground tunnels were used by Viet Cong soldiers during the Vietnam War as living areas, storage for ammunition and bomb shelters. Visitors can crawl through the narrow passageways, learn about the ingenious traps and living conditions, and even try their hand at shooting a vintage rifle.  

If you’re claustrophobic you’ll not want to go into the tunnels! The space is very tight and Bill found it to be a challenge, crawling on his hands and knees.

Tips:

• Wear comfortable clothing and sturdy shoes. Knee pads would be advisable.
• Be prepared for a physically demanding experience if you choose to explore the tunnels.

2.1. Ben Thanh Market: A Shopper’s Paradise

No visit to Saigon is complete without a trip to Ben Thanh Market. This bustling market is a microcosm of Vietnamese culture, offering everything from fresh produce and street food to clothing and souvenirs. It’s the perfect place to practice your bargaining skills and sample local delicacies.

Tips:

• Visit early in the morning to avoid the crowds.
• Be ready to haggle for the best prices.

2.2. War Remnants Museum: A Sobering Experience

To gain a deeper understanding of Vietnam's history and culture, spend a few hours at the War Remnants Museum. The exhibits here, which include photographs, documents, and military equipment, provide a poignant look at the Vietnam War and its impact on the country.

• Allocate at least two hours for a thorough visit.
• Be prepared for emotionally intense exhibits.

District 1 is the heart of Saigon and home to many of its most famous landmarks. Start your self-guided tour at the Notre-Dame Cathedral Basilica of Saigon, a stunning example of French colonial architecture. From there, head to the Saigon Central Post Office, designed by Gustave Eiffel, and then make your way to the Reunification Palace, a symbol of Vietnam’s tumultuous history.

Tips:

• Download a map or use a GPS app to navigate easily.
• Take breaks at the many cafes and enjoy Vietnamese coffee.

3.2. Street Food Adventure

Saigon is a food lover’s paradise, and one of the best ways to experience its culinary delights is through a self-guided street food tour. Start your journey in District 3, known for its diverse street food offerings. Sample dishes like banh mi (Vietnamese sandwich), pho (noodle soup), and banh xeo (Vietnamese pancake).

On one of our visits we stayed in District 1 and found a large covered food market within easy walking distance. The different stalls offered every type of food you can imagine - and the price was right! This was our Go To spot where we talked with locals and other tourists while enjoying excellent food and a beer.

Tips:

• Try to visit stalls that are popular with locals.
• Bring cash, as most street vendors do not accept credit cards.

4. Practical Tips for a Carefree Journey

4.1. Accommodation and Transportation

Choosing the right accommodation can make a significant difference in your travel experience. Saigon offers a wide range of options, from budget hostels to Airbnb’s to luxury hotels. For those who want to stay in the heart of the action, District 1 is the best choice and we chose a small family run hotel where the staff was amazing, the breakfast soup was the best we ever had, and the location was perfect for exploring.  For a quieter experience, consider staying in District 3 or 5.

Tips:

• Use booking platforms like Agoda, Airbnb or Booking.com to find the best deals.
• For transportation, consider using ride-hailing apps like Grab for convenience and safety.

4.2. Staying Safe and Healthy

While Saigon is generally safe for tourists, it’s essential to stay vigilant. Keep your belongings secure, especially in crowded areas, and be cautious of scams. Additionally, stay hydrated and be mindful of food hygiene to avoid any health issues.

Note: Saigon is filled with thousands of motor scooters so it’s best you learn, as quickly as possible, how to cross the street!  Our advice: start walking, look straight ahead, and keep up the same pace. You’ll find the drivers will go around you!  However, if you hesitate, you’re likely to encounter a problem. We learned this from our Vietnamese friend who helped us to cross the first time!

• Drink bottled water and eat at reputable places.
